1973 Volkswagen Thing for sale in Sylvania OH
Brief history of the Thing
The type 181's origin dates back to World War II where a total of 140,000 were produced. Volkswagen produced the Type 62 Kubelwagen during the war to fill the German army's need for a utility vehicle. This was Germany's version of the American made and produced Jeep. As the war ended, production halted. However, it was resurrected in the 1960's when the Mexican government showed an interest in entering the automobile industry. Known as the Safari in Mexico and as the Trekker in Britain, the Type 181 earned several nicknames over its production life. In the United States it would earn its most famous one: the Thing. Introduced in the US in 1973, the Thing functioned on an air-cooled flat-four engine with a four-speed manual transmission. The production run in the US only lasted two years; its limited production of 25,000 imported vehicles meant the Thing became a rarity as years passed, adding to its appeal.
